Qachuu Aloom Farmers

Qachuu Aloom in central Guatemala is reviving Maya-Achi ancestral knowledge about sacred seeds and nutritious foods grounded in the Maya worldview. The project focuses on heritage maize and amaranth, the relationship of Water, Sun, Earth, and Wind to the Maya cosmovision and agriculture, and living in reciprocity with sacred seeds. Qachuu Aloom invites Maya elders, midwives, and local spiritual guides to share their knowledge in their community, helping people unlearn the values of colonization. Qachuu Aloom promotes cultural practices associated with traditional Mayan textiles, caring for water as a living being, conserving heritage seeds, and it engages young people in analyzing Mayan history.
